Comments by "Heads Full Of Eyeballs" (@HeadsFullOfEyeballs) on "Putin's "landslide" is a new totalitarian milestone" video.
"The people" in the sense of "the populace, the nation" can be used with singular agreement. It's just a little unusual nowadays because modern English shows the opposite trend, always using plural agreement for words that describe groups even when the word is grammatically singular. Like in "the staff (sg) here are (pl) very polite".

YouTube wasn't demonetising his videos to please Putin. YouTube just has extremely dumb automated filters that respond to combinations of "advertiser-unfriendly" keywords and images regardless of context. So if you have tanks and explosions in your intro and talk about war and violence, as Anders does, you're likely to get demonetised and have to wait for a manual review (which they're usually too cheap to do, because humans want wages). It's a capitalism thing.

No, "people" in the sense of "populace, nation" can be used with singular agreement.

This isn't about you guys.

Sure, I guess, but "strongman leader" is hardly a role unique to Hitler. There are dozens and dozens of countries run that way at any given time.
