Escalation by sending conscripts to the front line.

It's making the front line a tiny bit longer for Ukraine, because they now have to protect the area where it bulges into Kursk. It's making the front line MUCH longer for Russia, because they previously only needed troops in areas where they were occupying Ukrainian territory, on the assumption that Ukraine wouldn't enter Russian territory. Whereas now they have to protect the entire length of the border to prevent Ukrainian incursions.

If it's that easy for Putin to increase his army and take all of Ukraine, why hasn't he done it yet? Because he's big on fair play and wants to give the Ukrainians a fighting chance?

If Putin uses nuclear weapons, then the question of what Ukraine's Western allies will permit Ukraine to do becomes irrelevant, because NATO itself will declare war on Russia.

Russia isn't the Soviet Union. It has neither the resources nor the manpower the Soviet Union did. Hell, Russia it hadn't inherited a massive stockpile of Soviet equipment, they would have lost this war long ago just through attrition.

The areas Russia stole from Ukraine are also officially Russian territory, yet they haven't used conscripts there. The issue isn't a legal one, it's a domestic policy problem. Sending conscripts to the front lines will be very unpopular and cause unrest, so Putin wants to avoid it if at all possible.
