The shame is that the German product quality that was once the envy of the world has has been abandoned by their automotive industries. VW Group’s EV offerings might well be fine vehicles, but they no longer maintain the public trust.

@rogerphelps9939 — It used to be far more than 4°C hotter than it is now, and not only was there no catastrophe, but from that point, the Earth progressed into an ice age. 🤔 Seems someone might still be crying “wolf” …
2
@RodneyW — The DNC wants to do that in the US, too — cancel all that don’t agree with “The Party” …

The strong will survive … Sorry, Alfred …

The Plaids are fun at the drag strip !!

Yep … They need to build a Tesla Corolla. Give it a low-price, small-battery, no frills option for those that only intend it as a commuter car and don’t want a game console built into their car. If Elon really wants to disrupt ICE, that will do it.
1
If they get paid enough, I’m sure they’ll be glad to help …

EV’s have a lot to offer to a significant portion of users. But they certainly are not universally beneficial to everyone. The governments that are buying into the rabid environmentalists’ predictions that are the delusional ones.

Old farts like us are probably cheering for FSD’s success even more than the young tech-nerds … The eyes just aren’t what they used to be, especially at night. I haven’t been interested in an EV, but if this FSD actually will work, I’m willing to put up with a few charging stops on the road trip.
1
That would be horrible … Like catching a flight from an airport only serviced by one airline …

You gotta remember — these are the same peoples that perpetrated the holocaust … nasty lot, these …

@jeffl4810 — The Earth’s human population has doubled since 1974. Is there any wonder why anthropogenic emissions have climbed ? Just sitting on their collective arses doing nothing, the Earth’s humans exhale 8-million metric tonnes of CO2 DAILY. And humans emit far more CO2 if they’re active …
1
davidsmith3302 — I’ve been surprised that e-motorcycles haven’t taken off. It seems to be the perfect application for electrification …

As a senior, there is no reason for me to buy an EV unless, when I get too decrepit to drive safely, Musk, Inc. has his FSD perfected. If it comes to that, I’d not hesitate to buy a Tesla. But from what I see so far from videos, the FSD is still a novelty item — though I will admit that the standard Autopilot does make road trips less taxing.

They lose money because they are amortizing the development and tooling costs for the vehicle. For [a very simplified] example, if their engineering, tooling and manufacturing costs for a vehicle line is $100,000, then they sell two cars for 25,000 each, then they have lost 25,000 for each car they’ve sold. (Obviously these figures are for example only.)
1
Still, EV’s make up only 8% of new car sales in the US, which means 92% of new cars being sold have an ICE engine. That’s to say, ICE cars will be around for a long time …
1
EV’s won’t release us from the petrol leash as long as we’re burning fossil fuels to produce electricity … But of course, you already knew that …
1
@adamkucera9094 — 😂😂

Those diesel VW Passats would go about 750 miles on a tank, and you’re right, it sure is nice to have that flexibility. My current vehicle will only do 520 AT BEST, and sometimes it flat-out pisses me off …

Where did you see the word “dealer” mention in connection with those stats ?

@fredbloggs5902 — CO2 emissions from coal-powered plants is worse than you’re thinking. Coal plants are only 30-33% efficient; the CO2 output per kWh is 1 kg (EIA, US Gov.). That’s 211 grams CO2/mile at 4.73 miles/kWh (2023 Tesla spec for Model 3SR). That is the equivalent CO2 g./mile of a petrol car that gets 42 mpg [8887 (g CO2/US gallon)/mpg)= 211 g. CO2/mile]. There are hybrid cars rated at better fuel mileage than 42 mpg. If you’re getting your electricity from 100% coal, there are “cleaner” options than a Tesla. The only state in the US where that would be a possible scenario would be West Virginia, I think. Edit: Fun fact: The average adult (sedentary) human exhales 1kg. CO2/day. So someone sitting on the couch watching TV all day emits as much CO2 as a coal-burning Tesla does driving 4.75 miles, or a natural-gas-burning Tesla does driving 11 miles (natural gas is much cleaner than coal).
1
@naturalselfyoga1617 — Re: the stats … Using coal to generate the juice for his Tesla Model 3, for his “1/4-of-the-[CO2) emissions” figure to be accurate, the ICE vehicle he’s comparing it to would have to be getting 10.5 mpg.

Who ?
1
@yggdrasil9039 — If I really cared I would have looked it up, already …

Why ? Is it a matter of pride ? Superiority bows to no one master …

@mikedar8484 — How many petrol or diesel vehicle fires took hours to extinguish ??

Vikings were never known for being mathematicians …
1
@allenhill4578 — If you need a commuter/utility car now, just buy a 5-7 year-old Toyota Corolla or Camry (4-cylinder, normally aspirated) and drive it like you’ve got some brains for the next 10 years. By time you need another car, EV battery tech should be mature enough to be reasonably priced such that used EV’s will be a viable choice.
1
You’re right, Dclanon. This guy uses kW in place of kWh quite often.

Build a commercial toilet (pay toilet) in front of every group of 19 parking spaces …

Interesting … Toyota stock has been performing better than Tesla’s lately …

My wife’s car is 24 years-old. She is saving $250/month in depreciation alone !
1
@yeahbuddy92193911 — What it means is that she’s driving about as inexpensively as possible. Insurance under $200/year, taxes $40/year. She can’t SAVE $250/month on fuel because the total she spends is $120/month. She would have to drive 25k miles/year to burn $250/month, and even then to save that much on fuel with an EV, she’d have to be getting the electricity for the EV for free. Oh, and she has no traction battery that would have been replaced at least once in those 24 years, and probably twice.

I just googled an “Aptera”. That’s one scary looking vehicle !

@berndborte8214 — Some people have no desire to stop every 2-3 hours for a break. That it won’t kill them to do it is irrelevant. It’s an inconvenience. And saying that the charging stop you’ve described takes 10-15 minutes is like me telling you that my refueling stops take two minutes. The time that your car is “plugged in” is only part of your interruption. Since I don’t have a squirrel’s bladder, and don’t need to feed every 2.5 hours, I don’t wish to stop. If the car is dictating my pit stops, then the car is deficient [edit: deficient for trips over 400 km.].
1
@berndborte8214 — No thanks. I’ll continue to enjoy the superiority of of my 600-mile-range vehicle and take my breaks when (and where) I damn well please. If it happens that mediocrity becomes the best available, I’ll adjust (settle), but until then, I choose to ignore these strawman EV-proselytizations by ADHD-addled, walnut-bladdered, virtue-signaling simps — that would be the likes of you ...
1
@berndborte8214 — No thanks. If “growing a pair” means I must settle for inferiority, I’ll pass …
1
@berndborte8214 — Yeah, yeah, yeah … And we‘ll have millions of robotaxis on the roads be 2020 … EV’s in America are like prohibition. They sound good to the social justice warriors, until the reality of their shortcomings cause more problems than they solve …
1
@berndborte8214 — Yeah … And we’ll have millions of robotaxis on the roads by 2020 …
