The Germans had just never experienced an enemy that fought back like the Russians by the end of September’41 the Germans had suffered 500k casualties an unsustainable number for their army and the War was already lost . In Dec. of ‘41 Stalin was already talking to Churchill about how they would divide up postwar Germany.

@Smudgeroon74 I never said anything formal was reached . Informal communications in Dec of 41’ Stalin was probing Churchill on how to divide Germany and again in Moscow in 42’ face to face they made agreements on the division of Berlin . This is why Berlin is divided even though the Russians conquered the city .

@Smudgeroon74 absolutely at Tehran , Yalta and Potsdam post war division of Europe was formalized with US participation. The point is Stalin had the hubris and apparently foresight to begin negotiations with Churchill in December of 1941 on how to divide Germany with the British whilst the German army was poised 50 kilometers from Moscow .

@awesomebrawel4050 the numbers don’t lie . By September the Germans had 500,000 casualties on the Eastern Front . This didn’t necessarily destroy the Wehrmacht but it destroy their operational capabilities. Leningrad turned into a stalemate. Army group Center lost troops to fight in the south which destroyed its capabilities to take Moscow . The Germans simply could not replace their losses and the war was essentially over .

@cellardoor9882 the bulk of lend lease happened after the Soviets had turned the tide . The West did this to get in on the spoils of the War . 80% of German casualties happen on the Eastern front .

@Francis-m2d there is correspondence between Stalin and Churchill discussing post war divisions of Germany in Dec. 41’ . Your numbers are about right the Germans invaded with 3.5 million men and had 500k in casualties by the end of September 41’ and the war was lost . The Germans could not sustain this rate of losses . The Germans lost more men in Russia in the first two weeks of the campaign than the two months in France . The rationalizations about winter and oil are just that rationalizations. Something Germans and others tell themselves to feel better about the loss.

@awesomebrawel4050 Soviet resistance is exactly what I am talking about it’s what caused 500,000 casualties in the Wehrmacht by September of 41’ which lead to the events you stated as a reason for German loss
1
@ way more than that closer to 2 million . The Germans had lost 1/2 a million by the end of September. The Soviets could absorb the losses the Germans could not it’s that simple .
