The Shining, the best horror movie of all times. Still, everything on the surface level is sacrificed more or less to tell many different stories that are interconnected and hidden, until you research and analyze forever and ever. Stanley Kubrick didn't produce films, he changed the medium completely and nobody has managed to replicate this, and most likely never will. Some say the man was one of the most intelligent and wise man that ever lived, and pretty much all say he is the most intelligent and wise man they ever met. After researching and analyzing Kubrick for years, I have to agree with Jack Nicholson "Everybody acknowledges that Stanley is The man, but I feel that still underestimates him".
So, when you analyze Kubrick films, remember that he made films that commoners and geniuses both can appreciate. He was complete perfectionist, so there is not anything on the final cut that wasn't mean to be there. And there usually are great confirming details all over, so you can be sure that what you found is really there on purpose. And there are important reasons why he shot so many takes. Media tried to trash him because he didn't give interviews, Hollywood hated him because he moved to England.
