  1. I have three cheap 1TB Samsung HDDs that have been running in RAID 0 24/7 since September 2009. So they have been spinning and pushing knowledge to P2P networks for 100.000 hours in the next couple of month. If you have good case that keeps the drives cool, protects them from vibrations, and if you have good quality PSU, then spinning HDDs will last longer. Obviously good case and PSU is something that every system benefits.
