@emacs Based on your comment, I had to check out NixOS. It seems really interesting and hopefully that type of package management comes really popular. I'm thinking of installing it to my daily driver computer. But I find it impossible to any distro ever take the place of Gentoo on my "hobby" laptop, which is also my daily driver, but one where I can take any sort of risks by playing around etc.

@agamenonatreo8529 I personally have Gentoo with testing branch and LTO overlay with max optimization. Some updates haven't compiled, but excluding those updates for a little while have fixed the issue. Still I get those updates up and running before any other distro, and on the meantime the previous version have worked fine. On stable branch with normal o2 optimization it's hard to imagine there's problems. But still Gentoo isn't for everyone. I personally love the fact that I get all the control and everything is compiled from sources. That feeling was a surprise, as I only installed Gentoo because I wanted lean and optimized system. Stable branch also puts out less updates, so compiling those takes less time. And if you lower the niceness and allow only couple of threads to be used for compiling, you can compile while you do other things. But again, it's not for everyone for sure.

@sigmundfreud4472 I like to play around, and wanted GCC 10 and newest kernels. But in reality both are great.

@emacs For some reason the fact that I'm compiling everything from sources gives me good elevating feeling. That's something I never could have imagined when starting to use Gentoo, but it has become big reason why I love it. USE flags is another big reason, and other configuration abilities. I love optimization so Gentoo is perfect for me. I personally hate systemd, I think it's really dangerous thing for Linux in the long run. Though it has already caused a lot of damage to Linux community. But I'm not purist when it comes to it, so it's not automatic deal breaker. After learning Gentoo, I'm confident that I can climb even the steepest learning curves. And just like with Gentoo, I would get comfortable with NixOS in VM at first.

@agamenonatreo8529 Real people have to sleep, that's perfect time for compiling. Though with modern Zen 2 CPUs compiling is really fast.

@GeoTechLand Gentoo is the best Linux, thus it's also better. Though it certainly is harder to install, as you build the whole system yourself. But damn it's worth it, and it transfers your Linux knowledge and talents.

@Ozzianman Gentoo gets shit done. Though the learning period takes time. Even though I have testing branch, use the heaviest optimizations with GentooLTO overlay etc. it still has been easy riding after the initial learning. And of course the speed is impressive. Firefox for example is 30% faster on browser benchmark vs. binary version. With slow computers, or if leaving computer compiling when you are not using is out of question, then skipping Gentoo is the way to go. But I can't go back to anything else anymore.

@Ozzianman Based on the discussions with some devs on Gentoo's IRC, it's now much more stable and robust than what it used to be. Though I can't say anything about that as I have been using it only for about a year. But for me it's been nearly perfect experience. If I were to make money with my computer, other than programming which I'm currently doing, I would have my files on other partition and continue using Gentoo. And if there were problems, or other reasons why I would want/need to switch distro, then I would do it. But now after seeing everything Gentoo can do, and also how fast compared to Ubuntu with same desktop environment it is, I couldn't switch back without a good reason. But I also get that my personality plays a big part of why I enjoy Gentoo so much, and I sincerely get why people wouldn't want to use it.
