Aah, the memories. Being young teenager in Finland (country that has only 5 million people) and constantly hearing rumors about some Finnish dude who has made his own operating system. Then finally playing with Linux in Assembly 1994 demoparty in Helsinki where Linux people had their own booth. I would so want to know if Linus was there, but I remember playing with the OS and laughing (it was the time of Amiga vs. PC war and I was in the Amiga camp) and then some dude who looked a lot like Linus got angry and threw us out from the booth. Safe to say I was a little bit wrong about the future prospects of that project. Though in my defense demoscene was cool, but the Linux people were the stereotypical 80s nerds. Those were the times when future seemed great and not technocratic dystopia.

@Reichstaubenminister Yep, also HellSinging as we have the most amount of metal bands per capita.

@Omnifarious0 I don't know much about Atari ST scene, but Amiga sure was amazing. On demos Amiga was surpassed only by 1995 when PC hardware was 486 DX2 66mhz with probably 8mb of RAM. It's funny to call that brute force, but it really was brute forcing things that Amiga couldn't achieve. And while Amiga demos were still more entertaining for the most part, as they focused on the full audiovisual thing more and the experience for the Amiga scene was higher. Amiga had just insanely good OS, so I thought PC as boring office toys. Until 3D games forced me to finally buy one.

@kevinsedwards Gotta say the 90s demoscene was just amazing. I was a little too young to fully be a part of that, even though I was in a group and we did some crappy demos and intros, mostly for the laughs and as a way to be a part of that community of people. The best memories of my life are those demoparties. While I rarely remember anything vividly from that time period, those are the things I remember so so well. While I dislike the era of everyone having smartphones with cameras, while these devices help a ton, I don't like the way they have shaped society, BUT I so would have loved for people to film those 90s demoparties. I mean the people were the coolest people imaginable and the events were just amazing.

@mskiptr Snowden already confirmed that all devices have hardware level backdoors, since some period. I would even assume there are laws that prevent other types of system to be sold in USA. The official explanation is like having cameras every room in your house with microphones just in case there's a fire. I trust these hardware companies 100% ... to screw me and my privacy over, and spy me as much as possible, in all the ways possible. That's the conclusion having following what has happened in the last 30yrs.
