  1. A note from Germany. Current german word for war is Krieg, but old word Streit has survived in some cases. Streitross/ warhorse ( you also see here old word Ross for Pferd, which is similar to horse), Streitwagen means war chariot (in swedish a stridsvagn is a tank). But i assume war can also be related to Wehr. Wehr can be a weapon ( dated), an armed force ( dated ) ot sich wehren , to defend yourself. Knowing this, Wehrmacht could be translated as , warmight '. English warden exists in german as Wächter, Wärter or Wart. I am german of swabian tribe ( south west Germany). In my local variant of swabian dialect, the words for stapeln ( to staple)/ Stapel ( staple) are beiga/ Beig. For all my life, i an 59 now, i could not explain this strange beiga/ Beig thing. Half a year i noticed scandinavian bygge means building, to build/ errect ( errichten). This scandinavian bygge explains Beig/ beiga in my homeregion.

  3. Germannic part of english language is still so much similar to german , that it was easy for me as german to learn it.

  4. German word for battle ( from french bataille) is Schlacht. But that Streit once also meant battle is not impossible. In current german Streit is more quarrel/ brawl ( my english is limited)and must not be violent. A very old word for battlefield/ Schlachtfeld is Walstatt, is no more used.

  5. Schlachten means in Standart German to butcher an annimal , and in northern part of german territory Schlachter means butcher. In southern Germany, where i live the butcher is called Metzger and to butcher is metzgen ( only used when speaking dialect). I assume is related to english meat or german Mett, which means fine minced raw pork. Also common for butcher is Fleischer (and less common words, german is not only spoken in Germany, are Fleischhauer, Fleischhacker, Beinhacker, Beinhauer, you as dutch speaker surely recognize.
