In german languages counties, dialects are still spoken.They are often closer to english than Standard German. For example in my swabian dialect i means ich (i). In Standard German ein means in english either a or one, in swabian dialect a and oi. Many words for Things, known before May be 800, are still similar. Tool names like Hammer/hammer,Axt/ axe, Pflug/ plough, annimal names like Bär/ bear, Bulle/ bull, Sier/steer, Schwein/ swine, Sau/ sow, Henne/ hen, Gockel ( Hahn)/ cock Ross ( Pferd)/horse, Gais (Ziege)/ goat, Hase/ hare, old weaponry Schwert/ sword, Speer/spear, Schild/ shield or Things of nature Wasser/water, Stein/ stone, Wind/ wind, Dunst/ dust, Flut/ flood.
A Sidenote to Knecht and knight. The first Knights ( Ritter, see Reiter/ Rider) had been chosen in Germany from unfree servants of high nobility, they had been at First an own class of persons, and are only since 1496 seen as a part of nobility.
