@markdavis7397 : Formerly, about 500 years ago , my german homeregion was Duchy Württemberg. The position of Herzoglicher Stallmeister ( Dukal Stablemaster) was hold not by a commoner but by a knight. Also this position was in those days seen important in military hirarchy. With ,stable of Duke' was meant ,All horses owned by the Duke', so in case of war a ,horse reserve'.

Marschall was once ,marhalalasc'. In english mare is still used , and in german Mähre ( a bad / old horse).

@Fucoc : German word for a female horse is Stute, a male horse a Hengst. I know that in very old days Marha was a male horse, and Mähre a female horse. But being not interessted in horses, also when my ancestors did farming ( up to 2001), before buying first tractor they had no horse, only cows to pull wagon and plough, so i personally know Mähre ( Schindmähre) only as a word for bad quality/ old horse. Note: A Schinder was once a man, who had to take away dead annimals from settlements and towns.

@meenki347 : Strangely some very old people in my region use the word Schindmähre for a not wellliked older woman. I explained that Mähre means an old or bad quality horse. A Schinder was once a person, whos job it was, to take away dead annimals from the houses and settlements. The meat could not been eaten, but the Schinder cut away the skin for producing leather, bones or Horns could be used for different purposes, and the man cooked the uneatable meat, to get fat for technical or chemical use, for example smearing wagon axles (?). So a Schindmähre IS a nearly dead horse, only usefull for a Schinder. For an elderly lady, who overestimates her importance , influence and stylishness in my younger years also , frigatte under füll sail' ( aufgetakelte Fregatte) was used.

@fghsgh : In early 16th century duchy Württemberg there was the then important title Herzoglicher Stallmeister ( Master of the Dukes stables). This man, usually a knight, was responsible for all horses , owned by the duke. The breeding stations, and all riding and drafting (?) horses living at his castles and farms. In Württemberg of those days, this horses had been important for war time, because in peacetime only militias on foot existed, but only few professional mounted mercennaries. Only in wartime mercennaries had been hired in larger numbers, even arround 1630s Dukes of Württemberg mobilized the noblemen and rich citizens as Cavallry.

@stephenremington8448 : In my german region, there are descendants of people living there for centuries, and germans of other regions/ tribes, who moved to my region for good ecomony reason. When you come in my region into a village, among the persons of first group, allways some family names appear more often than others, in my village this are the names Eppinger, Deuschle and Bosch. Formerly it sometimes caused confusion, when there had been for example three Friedrich Eppinger, about whom is spoken? So the people formerly, and some old people do still so, used a ,housename' for the different families. So this people still call one family with name Eppinger ,Hauptmanns' ( Captains), but their ancestor, who was once a Hauptmann, was not an Army Captain, but first Firebrigade Captain ( nowadays Kommandant) of the village.

In german the term Oberst was once called ,Oberster Feldhauptmann '. In medieval german a Hauptmann ( headman/ mainman)/ Captain was once the leader of a unit/ levie, regardless of size. So when in 1377 an Army consisting of troops from different towns Met the Army of Count of Württemberg and his allies , every town force fought under a Hauptmann, but the Hauptmann of Ulm became Oberster Feldhauptmann ( highest field captain)- over time called only Oberst. A Sergeant is in Germany/ Austria a Feldwebel, in Switzerland ( historicly more correct) a Feldweibel.

@sempersuffragium9951 : In middleages a Hauptmann was the commander, regardless of the size of his unit. But when many Hauptmänner ( may be from different towns) united their forces, the leader of all men was the ,Oberster Feldhauptmann'. And before 1945 it was Generalmajor, Generalleutnant, General der ....( branch), Generaloberst ( highest general). This was in Westgermany changed in 1955 into US rank system. But there ( and in Switzerland also) a Brigadegeneral is a Brigadier ( next higher rank in Switzerland : Divisionär and Korpskommandant). In Switzerland the rank General is only used, for the army main commander in wartime, last General in wwll was a man named Guisan.

@dashiellgillingham4579 : Even in modern days some countries have militia elements . And in Switzerland most soldiers are militiamen. What in modern Armys usually no more exists is the levie (?)/ Aufgebot in german, of men with their private weapons.

@blacbraun : In age of Monarchy there was also the ,Hofmarschall' ( court marshall), at least in Germany.

@jrobiii1 : When i was young, in my german village there had been two Generals. One was a man, who allways walked in a military body posture (?) and was proud of his succes, so General was simply his nickname, the other one was retired Generalmajor Eberbach, who was after wwll involved in many caritatve things. I remember, that when i was in Kindergarten age, an Army Band came to play some music to honour the wellreputated Generalmajor. In current days, the appearance of a german army band would be impossible.

@kullen2042 : May be one and a quarter hour of footmarch away from my village is an old oak, called ,Schindereiche'. From about 1830 to 1922 next to this oak was the ,Schinderhäusle', a small house with a small garden, surrounded by a wall, you can see relicts of the building. It was the working place of such a Schinder.

@sabinegierth-waniczek4872 : Ich bin Brittas Freund, benutze nur den Anschluss/ Rechner mit. Ich stamme aus Altwürttemberg, durch Erbteilung waren die Höfe daher sehr klein, meist nur eine bessere Selbstversorgung, die meisten waren zum Lebensunterhalt zu klein. Auch waren die Bauern meist Knechte bei größeren Bauern, Gesellen oder Handlanger bei Handwerkern, Helfer bei den Holzfällern oder übten ein kleines Gewerbe aus. Daher waren Pferde oder Ochsen als Zugtiere selten. Das war im Grund genommen noch in den 1950er Jahren so, sowohl in meiner väterlichen, als auch mütterlichen Familie. Das ,Angewöhnen' junger Kühe war nicht einfach, aber die Leute hatten Erfahrung und die Kühe wurden paarweise eingespannt. Das heißt, die neue junge Kuh hatte ein erfahrenes Tier zur Seite, was aber ein unwilliges Verhalten/Durchgehen des ,Lehrlings' nicht immer verhindern konnte. Auch Stechmücken sowie Bremsen ( auch Rinderbremsen genannt) sorgten immer wieder für ein Durchgehen der Tiere. Pferdegespanne waren allerdings schneller als Kühnespanne.

@DrBovdin : As i noted, this position was known in german monarchy era. So it is plausible, that this still exists in current european monarchies.
