  1. Otto Lilienthal was a known glider constuctor. But in early 19th century there was a tailor in german town Ulm , who did glider experiments. Seeming sucessfull, he wanted to show his sucess by promising, he could fly over Danube river from a small wooden tower. A large crowd wanted to see this, also noblemen and highranking persons. But the tailor failed and fell into Danube river, causing a poem making fun about the , Tailor of Ulm/ Schneider von Ulm'. May be twenty years ago, some scientists build a reconstruction of the glider. The scientists came to conclusion, that flying with the glider could have possible, but the tailor didn' t know that air over water ( Danube ) is not good for gliding.

  6. The Neandertal was a valley named after the german poet Neander, who often was there for artists inspiration. He lived in 17th century, and in 16/17th century it was liked by educated persons to translate their name into latin or greek language, so i don' t know, what Neander means in german language.

  7. I am Brittas boyfriend, german , but no academic. Those fencing students societies usualy don' t make Films or Videos of Mensur bouts. It is against their ,honour codex'. So in videos showing Mensur scenes, this seems to be either nonsens of non german productions, perhaps staged ( in an italian documentation of 1960s), or for current fencers strange looking ( 1950 GDR movie ,Der Untertan' or early Nazi era , Hans Westmar, einer von uns.). Thats what i have read in the comments of the noted Video scenes/clips.

  10. I am Brittas boyfriend and no academic. As far as i know, those visible Schmiss scars are today no more wanted, they use modern medical work . Soweit ich weis, sind diese auffälligen Schmisse heute nicht mehr erwünscht, die Wunden werden heute auf korrekte Art medizinisch behandelt.

The leather version was worn by Line Infantry and Dragoons/ Dragoner ( once being mounted infantry) , the steel/ tombak versions by Cuirassiers , some units of heavy saxon cavallry and some palace units, like Leibgendarmen. Artillry used a similar helmet, but with a ball for accident prevention. Light infantry , machine gun units and ,technical troops' ( engineers, transport units, railway,, telephone, telegraph, radio, fortress, and airforce ground personal) used the Tschako. Lancers wore Tschapka, a leather helmet with a tip down pyramide Dekoration, reminding to polish orgins of modern lancers ( see caps oft current polish presidents guards). Hussars wore Hussarenmütze ( a cylindrical fur cap, strengthen either with cardboard tube or thin wire mash ?). Sailors hat typical sailors cap. Officers a cap, similar to current police caps and ordinary soldiers a round cap, usually when not fighting. In colonies, german soldiers wore a hat, black soldiers a ,Fez', and chinese colonial police chinese hats and caps. Soldiers from southsea colonies often no headgear. Forgotten : Palace units also used headgear from before 1870, and a prussian guard unit 18th century grenadiers caps, also admirals and bavarian generals a hat, i don' t know the name.

  14. Thats not correct Mensur in this movie. The sword is called , Schläger' . Schlager is a german music type.

So i don' t know, if this swords are called Mensurschläger or only ,Schläger' In other context, a Schläger can also a sport tool (for example for Baseball, Hockey, Tennis or Golf) or a violent man. Mostly they have a large basket hilt ( Korbschläger) , rarer a bell shaped hilt ( Glockenschläger), also unsharpened ceremonial versions exist. Singular and plural is ( in german) both Schläger ( der Schläger singular/ die Schläger plural). The internatioally uncommon/ unknown ä , ü, ö ,ß can be also written ae, ue, oe, ss ( ß never appeares at the start of a word, and younger germans often no more use this letter.) I have a socalled ,tablett computer', so when touching a letter , unusual letters appeare (éèêëėùûūúöôóòõøœōäâàáāåãæßšśñń).

So it seems, i am no academic, there is a bit ,artistic freedom'. To a clip out of , Der Untertan' ( GDR movie) and ,Hans Westmar , einer von uns.' ( Hitler era movie) commenters say either the fencing style was formerly different, or artists freedom. To a clip , Notta de ..., Mensur' ( italian documentary?) commenters say, seems staged. So according to german language commenters, it seems, the mensurscenes of movies are not totsly reslistic.

  17. About six kilometers away from my village there is glider airfield. The gliders are either towed into air with a small single engine plane or with long steel ropes towed by a engine powered rotating ,drum' mounted on a truck. Up to about 1960 on top of a mountain there was a glider ramp where small gliders had been launched with a large rubber rope. This ramp , a small glider hall and a glider lift (!) was build in late 30s by german gouvernement, you still see relicts. This old glider site was only used for civilian gliders, not the rather large military versions.

  19. I am german, but no academic. As far as i know ,Dummer Junge' was the signal word for a ,Mensur duel', so the other student could recognize, that it was not an usual duel with military sabers or pistols.

  20. According to von Luckners own book, he was not a typical german navy , because he learned the sailors job up to Civilian captain. As civilian ship captain, he became automaticly ,Leutnant zur See ,der Reserve'. So he knew civilian way of shipping, but had to learn military/ war things, when he decided to join military navy.

  21.  @mcclaymore4062  : It is written the same way, but spoken different, what also many of my german countymen don't know. Also past tense ( ?) of schleifen/ to grind is ,geschliffen', while past tense of schleifen / to defortify is ,geschleift'. In some dialects, for example my swabian dialect ,schleifen' , spoken like ,to defortify' can also mean ,to carry a heavy thing'/ schleppen.

  24. May be fifteen years ago, i visited the castle of a descendant of Graf von Zeppelin during a historical tour. The descendant has now the name von Brandenstein- Zeppelin. In his castle he could show us a handfull relicts from an airship.
