I am German. In my language we use the latin alphabet like the English, with some in english language unknown letters. Ä, ä (Ae, ae)/Ö, ö (Oe, oe)/ Ü, ü (Ue, ue) and ß. In words of german origin you speak like it is written ( in swiss german some words are pronounced a bit more oldfashioned, so that many germans and austrans have a problem). The speaking- writing difference is mostly in words of non german origin. But the fact, that we write with the same letters than the english, this does not mean, that we speak it the same way. In spoken language V and W are different, or let members of this two nations speak ,th' or ,ch'.
