Al Caulique : In middle age there had been also noblemen in the part of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, which is now Switzerland, but compared to other regions, there had been few, and so in Switzerland the nobility had been not so dominant, and relicts of germanic/tribal traditions survived. In the canton Aargau you can still see the ruins of the Habichtsburg, which was the namegiving ,rootcastle' of the Habsburg family. And in the first half of 16th century the Counts of Gruyere/Greyerz died out , the last count became poor and had to sell his county. As far as i know, there are still two swiss noble familes existing, but for the reason that Switzerland is no monarchy for many centuries, these families have for centuries no special rights, they have only survived.
