I am german. My father told me, that some decades ago, in an inn in my village there was a trouble between a Mr. Graf ( count) and a Mr. König ( king). A man, Mr . Kaiser ( emperor) went to them and said: Be quiet! There is someone higher than you!

A note from Germany! I would translate ,von ' with , comming from ... castle' . But there are few commoners also with a ,von' in the name.

Every german nobleman ( few exeptions ) has a , von ' ( coming from) in name. In 19th century Bavaria the ,in' was used to not confusing the nonruling branch of House Wittelsbach, as far as i know. When in Germany a nobleman calls himself , von und zu' this means , he still owns the namegiving Castle.

German Bundespräsident ( Federal President) is elected by Bundesversammlung. 1200 people. Half of them are members of Federal parlament, other half members of state parlaments.

The german title is Markgraf, not Margrave! In medieval Germany a Markgraf was basicly a borderland ( Mark) count, with some rights of a duke ( Herzog)
