Some months ago a german military history magazine wrote about this topic. It was written two things: At first that german troops misinterpreted well hidden French or belgian regular soldiers for partisans, that especially at night accidently german soldiers fired at each others, and german soldiers had not been trasined in anti- partisan warfare , so they feared them ( partisan warfare is NO german tradition). Second: Belgian authorities often gave order to unregular partisan warfare, there had not enough belgian uniforms for all belgian volunteers, and there had not enough military weapons to equip all belgian volunteers, so that many of them used shotguns, shotguns had been seen as criminals weapons in Germany, even today only few shotguns are used by german army and police, it is not allowed to shoot at persons, only to destroy things.
So, it would have been necessary to also show view of wwl germans about unregular troops.

@gibraltersteamboatco888 : In case of colonial cruelty, Belgians should be quiet, see belgian king Leopold and his Kongo colony. Also the French should be quiet, in case of fighting partisans: Napoleons troops in Spain, and in Germany the tyrolian rebellion of Andreas Hofer and Major von Schill in northern Germany, also the burning down of german settlements in Palatine and along the Rhine by Louis XIV troops is a thing, which not appears in movies. With exeption of noted Hofer and von Schill, i don' t know partisan warfare in Germany. When in 1813 the Landwehr units had been formed, there was also planed, to form Landsturm formations, to fight french troops in partisan manner in civilian dress, but prussian king didn' t allow this.

@gibraltersteamboatco888 : There had been crimes, done by german soldiers in wwl Belgium, this is true. I only noted, that in the history magazine was written, what had been the reason. I wrote of german and belgian mistakes also. And one reason was, that this partisan thing was mostly unknown to german soldiers, but officers or other persons told them wrong (?) stories about the danger of irregular troops. Also i allways have doubts, when i hear fairytale stories oft angellike heroic partisans. They also did cruel things, which had been not heroic, but nearly nobody asks about. That is my point. Now, when i spoke oft French fight against spanish or tyrolian rebels. The French had invaded foreign soil, and fought, especially in Spain rather cruel against people in their own country, also in 1950s/ 60s Indochina or Algera. Now please tell me, why french call german invaders cruel, when did similar things, when they invaded other countries? Isn' t this a double standard? That' s the second point. And: I mistrust people, who say: It is allways the others fault, this is simply impossible, that it is allways the others fault.

@jorannielsen4213 : I am german, and i know, that the german grammar case and compound word system is difficult for foreigners. For the dass, that you think, Volkssturm is an unusual name only for Propaganda reason, no . In prussian army the word Landsturm appeared in 1813, it first was used for not uniformed groups of elderly / young/ unfit men , which had not been in the army and should support the regular troops by unregular warfare, but in reality, the prussian king wanted no irregular ununiformed forces, so this men had few appearence. Later up to WWl ,Landwehr' was used for midaged reserve soldiers, and Landsturm for the eldest reserve soldiers. Before 1800, in HRE there had been , especially in small german states, militia units for local defence. There had been many names for this units, including Landsturm. In some cases this militias had a basic training and useable equipment, but mostly this militias had been simply a nearly untrained levie of fightable men.

@bouchacourtthierry8506 : The actor Horst Tappert was a former SS soldier, he became famous as ,Inspektor Derrick'. Before, in bis cinema movie appeariances in the 60s, he was mostly seen as the bad guy. For the reason, that he was in SS, the TV show , Derrick' is no more shown in german TV. But on the other hand, there was a rather left wing writer Günter Grass, this man was rather liked by the mostly leftwing art commuuniy , by left wing politicans etc.. A short time before he dies, the writer, who was known to be left wing, had to admit, that he was an SS solider in ww ll. But been known being left wing for decades, this man got no problems for the short time, he was still alive.

@KR-jt4ut : So in 1618 to 1648 there had been no french and swedish troops in Germany? In reign of Louis XlV 1648 to 1714 the french did nothing in Palatine Region , Rhine Valley and other South West Regions of Germany , so what troops plundered my village in 1683? Napoleon was never in Germany? Current french and swedish people have nothing to do with this. But: I have never heared, that there had been ( with exeption of noted Hofer and Schill) a partisan movement in Germany, so from 1870 to 1845 saw this persons simply as criminals ( also i noted that using shotguns is in Germany seen as criminals work, for shotguns being never in the noted time, and also not today, a weapon of armed forces). But of course, invading other countries in Hitlers style, is simply a crime, and i can' t understand, how someone can have such ideas like Hitler and his supporters.

This was rather common in former times. I, german, have read in a book of the british ,Osprey' company, that in the Culloden battle 1746 in the scottish clan levies even 12-13 year old boys fought, and also men in their 70s ( imagine a man in his 70s in 18th century!), even madmen! But of course at the end of wwll this was unneccessary. In the last weeks of wwll there was a fight in the forrest of my homevillage. Three german soldiers died, they are burried not in regular graveyard, but at their own grave. One man was about 40 years, the others younger than 20. They died in an age, when you usualy start into your ,own' life.

@mathiasbartl903 : a) My english is limited, i had to use a translation to understand your comment. b) Who do you mean, Horst Tappert or Günter Grass? c) Horst Tapperts most known TV show , Derrick' no more appeares in TV , but i can ' t remember, that there was so much trouble/ scandal about Günter Grass. But i have to addmit, that i am not so interessted in such intellectual ,high end' artists, their kind of art is not my thing, decades ago , one oft the pupils of my class said: When you read in the newspaper, a movie is ,künstlerisch wertvoll/ in artistic sense worthfull(?)' then it's boring shit'. I , Brittas boyfriend, think similar.

@HistoryHustle : In english language Wikipedia is only a short description, when you look for ,Crailsheim' , and read about the history of this town. In german language Wikipedia you have to look for , Schlacht um Crailsheim' ( if you can read german). What happened in April 1945? The US forces which wanted to conquer Württemberg and Eastern Bavaria had been stopped by german troops, defending the Neckar- Tauber ( two Rivers) line. The US Dorfes tried to do a circular move arround the Neckar- Tauber line, to encircle ( ?) / einkesseln the german forces This seemed to be a fast sucess and the US forces advanced so fast, that the surprised german soldiers in town and airfield went away. But a rather fanatic SS General lauched a counteratack, surprisingly the Avantgarde of US forces had been encircled in Crailsheim, and after hard fighting they could reach the main army. Some acts of terror by SS had the result, that a hard battle between US and German forces started, tanks, artillry, planes ( including Me 262 Jets)... After nearly two weeks the fights ended, and nearly the whole town was destroyed.
