  1. In villages and small Towns there are only volunteer firefighters. In neighbouring 40000 inhabitants town, there is a Small Professional firefighters group for First fast Response, so the Professional group does First steps, until the volunteer Personal comes. In large Towns there are mostly Professional firefighters, but mostly in town districts, a Bit away from Main town, volunteer units still exist.

Variatione of the name, for reason of different dialects and the fact, that before 1873 german language was not standardized. Btw., it means a village mayor, lesser a town mayor. In time of HRE a Schultheiß was in socalled Imperial Towns an official in service of Emperor, not mayor.

  8. Also firemen in Germany once used Signal horns. Sometimes also Drums. My father , when he was young, knew last firebrigade Drummer of my village. He told me a funny incident with this man in 1950s, when the former Drummer was drunken, and wanted to play former Signals.

  13. I clearly noted, that this is word use in my (my!!!!!) homeregion. In my homeregion/ dialect a number of words has a different meaning than Standard German.

  14. Ich habe jetzt mehrmals darauf hingewiesen, daß man in meiner Heimatgegend, zwischen Stuttgart und dem Albtrauf mit Most vergorenen Apfel - und/ oder Birnenmost meint. Frischgepressten Apfel - oder Birnensaft nennt man hier süßen Most. Da in meiner engeren Heimatgegend fast kein Wein mehr angepflanzt wird, wird traditionell allenfalls noch Träubles( Johannisbeer)saft hergestellt, anderer Fruchtsaft war früher nicht üblich, zumindest hat meine Mutter in den 60er/70er Jahren keinen anderen Saft selbstgemacht. Früchte anderer Bäume bzw. Büsche wurden nicht zu Saft, sondern zu Schnaps verarbeitet, es gab in meiner Kindheit , bzw. Jugend praktisch in jedem Ort einen Schnapsbrenner. Während man also bei mir mit Most vergorenener Apfel - und / oder Birnensaft gemeint ist, wird anderswo (!) auch anderer Fruchtsaft als Most bezeichnet. Das ist mir seit Jahren bekannt. Ich wollte lediglich auf die Verwendung des Wortes in meiner Heimatgegend hinweisen.

  17. @matt: You know absolutely nothing about german family names . Fensterscheib ( window glass) was / is a nickname. In family history of Fensterscheib there was an incident, where something happened with a window glass, or an ancestor was a Glaser ( a glass craftsman). Before 13th century no common german ( including current Austria/ Switzerland, Luxemburg , Liechtenstein, flemish pr dutch) person had a family name. This started in 13th century in southern part of german language area, and ended in late 15th century in northern part of german language area. What origin have german family names? Some end with sen, meaning son of ..., this system is still used in Iceland and irish Mac or Irish o' IS the same. Others , ending with -er mean ,the man comming from ...', for example Dettinger coming from Dettingen. Other names describe the tribe. For example Frank(e) means , coming from franconian tribal area'. Others are describing a craft: Bauer ( farmer), Fischer ( fisher) or Bäcker/ Becker/ Beck/ Bäck ( baker). The example Baker shows the dialect differences. Other family names show a first name of an ancestor, but no more common names cause today problems. For example Frommholz (religious / believing wood) is in reallity no more common first name Fromold. Other family names Lang ( long), Kurz ( short), Feist ( very fat), Schönhaar ( beautyfull hair) describe the Look/ body of an ancestor. Some names are pure nicknames, for example Sparbier ( saving beer): An ancestor was an innkeeper who.watered down the sold beer. Some names are today no more understandable, names, or words of old days are today unknown, because over many centuries german language changed very much, some words are unknown in other dialect regions, or mean something different in another dialect. Also: Before 1873 german language was not standardized, so you could until 1870s write, as you wanted, a problem for family name understanding. And in Renaissance periode educated persons translated their names into latin or old greek to sound educated and fancy. Mr. Pistorius' (current Minister of defence), had once ancestors with ordinary name Bäcker/ Baker, or reformationer Philipp Melanchthons real name was Schwarzerd ( black earth), oh Schwarzenegger means not Schwarzneger ( black negro), but ,Schwarze Äcker' - black fields. German Acker is perhaps related to english acre, which is in german a , Morgen '.

  19. I am german. In 1980s in local newspaper pupils of a Gymnasium ( highest german ,highschool' Type) class wrote about their excange time in USA. They told, that they for fun spoke in french language, and claimed, they are from french part of their hometown. Even some teachers did not recognize the joke at once.
