As far as i know, after ,german' unification in 1871 there was a law, that now the change of spelling the name was no more allowed. So in 1873 (?) the german people had to use the version of writing used in 1873. This is the reason why in Germany the ,th' appeares today nearly only in names.

@jensschroder8214 : A Schneider is a Tailor, but a Schröder/ Schröter cut something into pieces. May be, you have seen an anvill / Amboss. There are round and square holes in it. This holes are intended for additional tools. One of them is the Abschrott, with which you can cut firered Iron Bars. And Schot can mean either shotgun shot or not so fine milled cereals.

@nephrotranz : My english is limited. Schrot can also be gunshot or wheat, barley, rhye etc. milled not to fine powder/dust, but only to visible and feelable pieces.

@ulrikschackmeyer848 : In some german regions a Maier, Meier, Mayer, Meyer, Majer, Mayr etc. was called Hofmann/ Hoffmann. You surely know the funny song , Herr Maier (?) wird verlangt!' by Comedian Heinz Erhardt. You noted Roger Moore. Moore can be something in context of a moor ( in german, der Mohr') but also of moor ( in german ,das Moor').

@SchmulKrieger : I am Brittas Freund boyfriend, only using her Computer also. I come from swabian region and ,Tal' is in swabian dialect a Dal. Krieg is spoken Griag and what Bollezei is, you now can think. When using dialect words, you sometimes recognize related english words: Lache and lake, Gockel and cock. Also, in contrast to Standard German, swabian dialect makes a difference between a (a) and oi ( one).
