In Germany a person with a ,von' in the name is a member of former nobility. In November 1918 monarchy in Germany ended, and in 1919 with new consistution the nobility was officialy abandonned, but up to now, it is allowed to use former titles in nonofficial documents. Some of this former noblemen use , von und zu', this means , they still own the castle. from which their Name once came.
There is an old Joke: Two elderly ladies meet each other after many years. One of the Ladies says: I married a noblemen with a ,von and zu'. The other Lady answered : I know this, my husband also went , auf und davon'. Auf und davon, this is a German saying for ,running away at once'.
My father told me a funny story: In an inn of my homevillage a Mr. Graf ( count) and a Mr. König ( King) had a loud Dispute. A Mr. Kaiser ( emperor) became angry about this loud Dispute: Mr. Graf and Mr. König be quiet! I am a Kaiser , so with my Rank i order this!
