I am german, Brittas boyfriend. The Postschutz ( postal protection) was intended to guard post buildings , post trains ( or single post wagons in an ordinary train) . Up to 1990s german post was a 100% gouvernement owned company, and not only letters and parcels had been post work, also telephone and postal bank had been formerly postal branches, also no more existing telegraph. So there had been a large number of buildings , vehicles, railway wagons, telephone and telegraph lines. And in wartime may be more things.
Also up to 1990s german railway was mostly gouvernement owned , with a Bahnpolizei/ railway police. In wartime also the Bahnschutz existed, as a guard unit only ( but not well reputated). So sometimes the ,soldiers' defending german trains in wwll had been in reality members of railway police, railway protection and postal protection.

@CtrlAltRetreat : To a lower degree also. Postal horse wagons ( and the passengers) had sometimes also robbed, but as far as i know, last robberies had been in 1830s. But up to 1840s in my state ( formerly Kingdom Württemberg) a rural policeman escorted the wagon, when passengers wanted this and paid a Gebühr ( fee?). The fact, that distances between german villages are much shorter than USA , and the fact, that 19th century Germany consisted of 36 states , in contrast to more than 300 in HRE time made it for ,road robbers' difficult. Horse pulled freight wagons had also sometimes robbed, but this happened not to often, but in a not so inhabitated region of Germany still a series of freight wagons happened in 1910s/ 1920s. It happens sometimes still now that postal offices are robbed, so i think, this happened also in Germany/ Austria before 1914. I have heared, that in some regular postal offices had been revolvers, but i don' t know, it this is true. Also after 1871 a ,Reichspost' existed, but the smaller kingdoms Bayern, Sachsen and Württemberg still had their own postal and railway service. That some postmen had pistols is possible, but i know only, that they got a truncheon/ baton when transporting money or other more expensive things. Protecting postal railway wagons was as far as i know, a thing for railway police. But up to 1890s most german policemen had only sabers.
