  1. When this headgear was introduced to french Foreign Legion in 19th century, it replaced an unpracticsl headgear. I don' t know if the story IS true, but legionaires from german language countries liked their new Käppi so much , that french army introduced the word Képi for this. Kapp, Kappe, Käppie are german words meaning cap. Currently Kappe ( Standard German) and Kapp/ Käppie ( dialects) is rather replaced with Mütze. So Képi comming from german Kappe ( in english Cap) sounds plausible.
