In german ,man' is ,Mann'. Kaufmann means merchant, Zimmermann ( timber man?) means carpenter. There are many german names ending with ,-mann, and you find many US citizens, with a ,man' ending, but a clearly german first part. So this Mr. Kaufman surely had german ancestry.

: Zimmer means in fact room or chamber. But the carpenter craftsmen are in Germany called Zimmermann or oldfashioned Zimmerer and this for centuries.Formerly we had in Germany mostly Fachwerkhäuser/ timberwood houses. The , skeleton' of these houses had been made of ,timbers, when the ,skeleton' was errected ( gezimmert wurde) you could see the floors and rooms, so the Zimmermann really made the rooms .

@Enwurd Jogger : We germans call ourselfes ,deutsch' , with ,germanisch' we mean germanic. I personally do not know the origin of germans or Germanen. I am not Britta, i am her boyfriend. My tribe , the swabians/ Schwaben called themself from third to ninth century ,Alemannen'. In current german this would be , alle Männer' which is for some reasons possible. ( Alemannen- les allemandes in french). German is sometimes used as mens first name, but as family name it would be Germann or Gehrmann.
