@BlackWhiteCater : German person here. For reason of our gunlaw, i don' t own firearms, for reason of my bad eyes, i, Brittas boyfriend, didn' t serve in german armed forces. So yes, i am a pure armchair expert.
Remembering my knowledge of physic science, a pistol Projektile will have , when hardness and Type is similar, more Penetration, when the Power per square mm is Higher. A .45 Acp bullet, in , Kennblätter für fremdes Gerät' called 11,5 Colt (a) has , over the thumb' about 100 square mm, a 9mm Parabellum , also ,over the thumb' about 65 square mm . So a . 45 with about 500 to 540 Joules has about 5 to 5,4 Joule per square mm. A 9 mm Parabellum with 470 to 500 Joules has about 6 to 7 Joules per square mm.
Both in wwl and wwll a lot of pistols in .32 Acp/ 7,65 Browning had been used by german forces, often this pistols had been also produced in .380Acp/ 9mm kurz, but the 9mm kurz versions had not been liked by German forces. A) Cartridges was lesser popular/ produced. B) According to German Arms Magazines, 7, 65 Browning had better Penetration against wood. And field fortifications had often been wood- earth fortifications.
When hunting Bonnie and Clyde, Frank Hammer used still his SAA short Barrel in .45 LC, but against Bonnie & Clydes cars, he also used a Colt 1911, but in .38 Super Automatic for Penetration.
Nobody used Armour then? Hm. Yes, before ww I armoured civilian cars for Monarchs, Presidents etc. had been very rare, see Sarajewo 1914 ( have seen the car in Vienna/Militärhistorisches Museum), also in interwar Periode they had been rare, but existed. Unfortunatly, 1934 (?) , Videos exist, jugoslavian King Alexander was assasinated through an open Car Window. But not only Kings and Presidents had armoured civilian cars, also US Gangsters like Al Capone had armoured cars. Some of this cars , like the one of Al Capone had been fine crafted, as a german Style trained metal worker i am allways astonished about the craftsmen' s skill decades or centuries ago, but some armoured Gangster cars had been crude improvisations. When USA entered war in 1941, there was no armoured civil Car for US President, so as substitute during construction, the one of Al Capone was used. In a german Museum i have seen two armoured cars of this Periode, used by supporters of Austrian Charlie Chaplin, who was not as fine than US one.
But i think, with Armour, you mean Body Armour. When wwl started, many cuirassiers and heavy cavallry men still wore cuirass and Metal helmet. But this could protect only against edged weapons, may be shrappnell or older big bore Revolver cartridges, weak Powder Charge and uncovered lead bullet. During war, soldiers got Steel helmets, and the different armies tested hard and soft Body Armour. But in interwar era, this Armour Experiments ended, so in wwll only US Flak jackets and a russian Steelplate Armour was used in noteable quantities. In civilian context also Lots of protection vests had been build and tested, some had been good against weak cartridges.
