  2.  @andrewshaw1571  : You have forgotten prussian breech loader field cannons! Also Austria , since 1867 Austria - Hungary had a problem, Prussia had not. Austrian soldiers spoke german, hungarian, czech, slowakian, slovenian, croatian, polish, romanian, bosnian, ruthenian or italian in 1866! In Vienna i, german , and Brittas boyfriend, have visited Military Museum in former Arsenal, there i have seen a book for German officers in Austrian Army. At first the military call was written in german. Then the same call was written in hungarian, czech etc. language. Behind the call, written in a nongerman language, it was written, how a german language officer of austrian army has to speak it. To explain it: If english speaking soldiers would have served in Austrian ( or Austro- Hungarian Army) behind the call : Draw your saber! There would have been written: Droh jor Seiber! And our languges are both germanic laguages, so the problem was not easy. Also in 1866 Prussia did the ( River) Main campaign against prussian allies Bavaria (30000 men) , Württemberg ( 13600 men) , Baden ( 10000 men) and Hessen- Darmstadt ( 6400 men). On paper a force of 60000 men in two of German Confededation Army Corps ( Nr. 7 and Nr.8). But instead of uniting, every southern army tried to defend its country alone. So it was for prussian Mainriver Army rather easy to defeat every southern army in a small fight, we Germans call Gefecht ( not Schlacht/ Battle), but much larger than a skirmish/ Geplänkel. Only much larger Bavarian Army did more than one Gefecht, and outdated Fortess Marienburg ( in Würzburg) was Shot with cannons. And the southern armies , both soldiers and officers, had not the Training quality of prussian troops. For example in Württemberg, where i come from ( nowadays state Baden-Württemberg), there was a serving duty/ Wehrpflicht but similar to Switzerland it was only a rather short Training. And in 1866 the troops of duchies, principalities and free Towns, from 55 men ( Liechtenstein) up to may be 300 men had been only usefull as guards, escorts or Fortress personel. But in 1866 Austria fought also against prussian Ally Italy, here the Austrians won, most famous Battle of Custozza and ( naval!) Battle of Lissa.
