@Willy_Tepes : As far as i know, the Schußwaffengesetz from 1928 was no ban of private firearms, but a restriction. In Imperial Germany, basicly every well reputsted person could buy a gun, rifles and shotguns easier than pistols. For carrieing a pistol for selfdefence a Waffenschein ( ccw licence?) was necessary since 1890s. As far as i know, in 1928 the ,Bedürfnis ' ( necessarity?) for owning a firearm was added to law.

@DeusMalleus : In early 1890s, the highest real policeman of Prussia, largest state in Imperial Germany 1871 to 1918, hold a speech in prussian Parlament, that prussian policemen, usually armed only with a short saber in ,Briquet' style, more and more have to face pistol armed criminals, so that they often can' t do anything. This speech caused three things: Up to 1912 all policemen had pistols, a ccw- licence ( Waffenschein) was introduced, in 1900 licencefree ( up to 2008) blank/ gas guns appeared.

@Willy_Tepes : I am not sure. I thought, also police weapons had been restricted. For example the Schutzpolizei of Weimar era had five SMG per hundred men, more was not allowed. But i read this long ago, and don' t remember, if Weimar era police, being no Schutzpolizei also had SMG. And: i am no expert, so i can be wrong.

@Willy_Tepes : The ,allowed' weapons included also the sabers, german policemen used into 1930s. The only not regulated wespons for police use would have been batons/ truncheons/ sticks and shotguns, but shotguns had been (are still today) unvommon for german law enforcement.
