Mark once meant a half pound, so when in medieval times you had to pay ,One Mark silver' for something, this was not a ,One Mark' silver coin, but a half pound of silver, this could be a mix of silver coins, rings and a small plate.

The Gendarmerie ( in Württemberg Landjäger) was a police force for rural areas . In times of monarchy there had been town police in the Amtsstadt ( Oberamt was the wurttembergian term for Landkreis/ county/ Arrondissement) , also whealty villages or Landstädtchen/ rural towns had their own police. But most oft the villages and ,rural towns' had no own policemen. This was the area of the Gendarmerie/ Landjäger. Here in Central Württemberg, where i live, the distances between two villages had been small, so that the ,beat' of a Gendarm consisted of two or three villages. But in every town or village there had been in imperial times also auxillary policemen: The Amts- or Polizeidiener ( town crier?), the Nachtwächter ( nightwatchman) and the Feldschütz ( viele gard/ garde champetre).
