Remember, Up to wwl the firepowwr of infantry units had been only the rifles of the soldiers. With a long Barrel the power of powder charge was better useable. But main reason was more reach when bayonnet fencing an enemy infantryman or cavallryman with only a sword ( and No lance). This trench warfare of wwl was not unknown, siege warfare was similar, but when 17th century ended, the time of legendary siege was over.
