In traditional german military terminology, there is a difference between Gewehr and Karabiner. A Gewehr is a full length musket ( flintlock to wwll), while a Karabiner is a shorter long gun , in black powder era used mostly by cavallry , artillry and transport/supporting units. In black powder era often in the muzzleloader and singleshot cartidge carbines used lighter powder charges, often only pistol loads ( At first austrian M70 revolver and Werndl carbine used same cartidge, but different charges. But: When revolver cartidge was used in carbine, only Power and accuracy was smaller, but carbine cartidge version in revolver caused accidents, at least Magnum feelings. So for a long time fullsized Gewehre in musketsize had been the battleriflles. Most fighting men had been up to start of wwl infantry units, only armed with musketsize rifles and bayonnets, the few officers, flagbesrdrs, trumpeters with pistols and swords had been not important. The role of sniper rifle was long done by Jägerbüchse, at first civilian rifles, later standardized rifles with civilian features. Last Jägerbüchse was M71 Jägerbüchse. Ordinary M71, only traditional length ( between carbine and infantry rifle), a finger hook at trigger guard and more carefully produced barrels and Iron sights.
