@AAArnold : Please calm down! It is true, that Ian likes french weapons and has visited France several times. In some oft bis videos he says, that he can not really speak german . So i think, his french is better than his german. Before i come to the Gebirgsjäger, something in general. What is english language? Very simplyfied: A mix of normanic french (french with viking influence) and a very old version of low german (A region in the state Schleswig-Holstein is still called Angeln, and the state Niedersachsen has its name from the saxons). So theoretically it should be no problem for an english speaker to learn both French and german. Jäger means huntsman vor light infantryman, the first units in early 18th century had been really professional hunters and forrest officals. When WWl started, the german army had no mountain troops. In the Vosges/Vogesen, not in the Alps, the german mountain troops began to exist, when german Jäger soldiers noticed, that the french ,Chasseurs Alpines' hat been better equipped and trained for mountain warfare. Two years ago i took part in a guided tour to the Hartmannsweiler Kopf, a mountain in the vosges, wäre you still can see the trenches, especially the german ones. The guide was the director of the ,Wehrgeschichtliches Museum Rastatt' himself.
