  4.  @hendriktonisson2915  : When the .30 M1 cartridge, and the weapon was designed, a firearm like Sturmgewehr 44 or Kalaschnikow didn' t exist. The Sturmgewehre ( i am german) had been intended for frontline use, while the .30 M1 carbine was intended as a weapon for rearline/ supporting troops or for soldiers, where a heavy weapon ( cannon etc. ) was main weapon. The weaponry for such soldiers was a problem for centuries, often they got simply old or outdated weapons.

  5.  @WALTERBROADDUS  : That is true. In a modern army there are still a lot of armed fighters like in very old days, but more and more soldiers are necessary for transport, logistics, communication or heavy weapon/ equipment crews. Their mainjob is simply to support the realy fighting soldiers, but in case of danger. also they have to deal with enemies, they need a weapon not to conquuer a position, but to counter enemie attacks and retreat safely.
