Swiss cavallry before 1927 consisted only of two branches. Dragoner and Guiden. No lancers, hussars, cuirassiers. The Dragoner/ dragoons started in 16th century as mounted infantry, using bad quality riding horses , not as fighting equipment, but only for quick moving before railway and motorisarion. When reaching war/ fighting zone, early dragoons fought as infantry. In 18th century most dragoon units became in Europe part of heavy cavallry, the second attack/ charge wave after cuirassiers and gendarmes. But , as Friedrich ( Frederick) ll of Prussia noted: The dragoons today mostly fight on horseback, but there must be still basics of infantry training, they must not be elite infantry, but should know it. In 19th century german language countries up to 1914 dragoons had been seen as heavy cavallry, lesser as mounted infantry. Second branch of Swiss cavallry, abandonned in 1927, had been the Guiden (yes , a similarity to guides/ Führer). This Guiden had been a number of mounted soldiers, added to every Swiss division. Perhaps you know, every Roman Legion had 120/130 horsemen. Not for charging, but as scouts, escorts, reconnaisance, Messengers.... This explains tasks of Swiss Guiden.
