In 1945 famous Mauser collection in Oberndorf was stolen by french and US soldiers. Current Waffenmuseum ( weapons museum) is a very sad shadow of former times. A modernisation would be great, and especially the weapons, made by Mauser from mid 1880s to end of wwll are often in low to bad condition. There are few, but mostly well preserved weapons from Mauser forerunner Königlich württembergische Waffenmanufaktur ( Royal württembergian weapons manufacture). This state owned company was founded 1812 in a former monastry, because Württemberg in HRE and napoleonic age had no large gun company/.arsenal to arm its forces. The first two directors of Royal Weapons Factory had been two localy wellknown gunmakers/ gunsmiths ( in german this is only Büchsenmacher). Both , of course one , then the next one, had the right, to produce in addition to military weapons, still their known quality civilian firearms. So at least in ending flintlock era, you could order an expensive civilian firearm in Royal Weapons Factory, this was done by director himself . To Finish my description about museum. In addition to weapons of Mauser and Königlich württembergische Waffenmanufaktur also weapons of Heckler & Kock and Feinwerkbau / FWB ( a pure olympic competition weapons producer) are shown in good quality, some strange target pistols selfmade by Mauser workers and civilian Mauser products: Two different cars (!) , bureau machines, and measurement Equipment ( when i started my joblife in 1982, every Young Metal worker proudly showed his Mauser (!calipher). The entrance price IS cheap, and with the same Ticket you also can visit Oberndorf homeregion museum. Two parts are inressting : Rusty sword blades and speartips from germannic warrior graves and a picture from a funeral of 1916. It shows a german priest and a group of german soldiers at the funeral of two british pilots, shot down,, when they attacked Mauser Factory. Far away from wwl frontline, elderly soldiers still respected a brave enemy.
