I am not Britta herself, but her boyfriend. About 20 years ago, i bought a hat in a small and very oldfashioned shop, owned by an old lady, which looked much older, because of her oldfashioned dress and hairstyle. The lady told me about an incident with her blank pistol ( could be carried without licence up to 2008) , a policeofficer had asked her, why she correctly handled the pistol, and she told him , that she learned this in wwll german army. She showed me her lower leg, where she had a wound from a larger piece of shrappnel ( ?)/ Granatsplitter.

As a german Facharbeiter(trained worker) i must speak about a small mistake, unclear description Ian has made. The word Meister can mean a ,Champion' or a very talented craftsman, artist etc.. But in this case a Meister means a ,master craftsman' , a title which goes back to middle ages. Formerly a boy who wants to become a craftsman started his training at an age of 14 (my father was some weeks younger than 14 when he started in 1952) as a , Lehrling (today Auszubildender), today with 17 or 18 (the school system changed), after a training time of usually 3 to 3,5 years you are in Industry a Facharbeiter, in old style (non industrial) craftmanship/ Handwerk you are a Geselle, also a title which goes back to middle age. When you worked some years as a Facharbeiter or Geselle you can do a difficult and expensive training and you have to produce a Meisterstück/ mastrepiece. When everything is well a Facharbeiter becomes an Industriemeister, a Geselle becomes a Handwerksmeister. Whats the difference? A Handwerksmeister can open his own Werkstatt/ shop(??), hire some Gesellen, train new Lehrlinge as it has been for centuries, while an Industriemeister is ,only' the leader of a team of workers or a production room etc. in an industral factory, whatever products the factory produces. A Waffenmeister doesn't work in a armsfactory, thats an an armorer who has to repair and inspect the arms of soldiers, policemen etc. or this word is very rare used for a Fechtmeister/ maitre d'armes.

A note from Germany: The man, who noticed the teenagers had as far as i know, the job of Pedell, nowadays in schools or public buildings called simply Hausmeister, like in civilian Mietshäuser ( don' t know english word). The usual work of such a man was to keep the building clean, to do small repairs, doimg some gardeners work and Put snow away in Winter. Also the Hausmeister had to follow Orders of Direktor of School, mayor or other building Leader, for example bringing Letters to Post Office. But to some degree the Hausmeister, was / is also a Kind of Security man. The Hausmeister has to lock the Doors and Gates of building, also a Hausmeister has to Look at Strangers on school round. In my youth at every shool was Hausmeister, today this is No more allways the Case, that at every school a Hausmeister works, Not so good for Security of children.
In University, or Gymnasium formerly the Hausmeister was called Pedell and Had much more Power than today, so arresting persons was then surely allowed, in Hitler Era also firemen could Arrest people, but only in context of firemen work. I personally think , the word Pedell is relaed to Büttel, a dated word for auxillary policemen or town criers (?).
