@sboss774 Not quite. Putin wanted NATO to accept Moscow on HIS terms -- to beg Russia to join. He saw Moscow as a second anchor to Washington. Essentially having equal (super) status within NATO. That could never fly. America would have to remain 'first among equals.'

@SangiinKherem Because of satellite images, the West knows that Putin has thrown in 90+% of what he has available. He's so short of talent that he's brought mercenaries in, Syrians in, Chechens in. Zelenskyy has by far the larger army. It just comes up short WRT: weapons, uniforms, boots, helmets, ammo -- and training. All of these factors are being addressed. By late June, Zelenskyy will have by far the better army. ( Still no navy, ... no air force beyond annoying. )

@korayven9255 When the USSR broke up the Chernobyl fiasco was STILL Top Secret -- and not noted on any (ordinary) maps. When Putin invaded Ukraine, he handed out what amounted to 'Esso road maps' to his boys. Yes. (His boys from Siberia had never heard a word about the fiasco -- all these years.) These didn't show ANY of the 'radioactive issues' around Chernobyl and the Red Forest. THAT'S why the boys dug into ground no sane person would disturb. When Chernobyl was recovered by Kyiv, Geiger counter readings were taken at the trenches. It's a certainty that Putin has hundreds if not thousands of radiation illnesses to deal with -- and the rumor mill, too.

James Smith Correction: Putin's speech (22-2-22) recognized the two (2) republics. He wanted to re-invade on that date, too. But his boys were simply not ready. 48-hours later, they went in.

@unduloid Read up. Speer mentioned that the atomic bomb program in Nazi Germany was -- essentially a joke. The scientists involved didn't even ASK for the resources required. Why? It took 20% of America's entire electrical output to run its project -- the same amount would've been 50% of Germany's output. The Manhattan Project used astounding amounts of nickel. (Canada) Whereas Germany was critically short of nickel. And so forth. (Lack of nickel ruined Germany's jet engine program. Months were lost trying to engineer around its lack. At the end, Nazi engines could only stay running about 20-hours. Then they started falling apart. First generation British and American jet engines lasted about 200-hours.)

@unduloid He was commenting on what German atomic experts asked of HIM -- as THE guy who prioritized Nazi war production. As to the specifics, he ran the war from the C-suite. For him it was never how a given anything worked. It was always how expensive was it to make... how soon... how wanted by the Nazi military, does it need critically short anythings ? He flatly stated that the V-2 was an epic error -- for himself -- and that he absolutely would've prioritized the A-bomb if he'd had ANY idea of how practical and devastating it would prove to be. Keep in mind that the USA spent Large on a scheme that even the experts did not know would work. (Fat Man) Little Boy would obviously work -- but it was TOO EXPENSIVE. (Going full tilt, the engineers figured that the US could produce about 2 maybe 3 Little Boy's per year. Later, things would change. But, early in, it was soon obvious that Fat Man was THE route to mass produced atomic bombs. This has proved to be entirely true.)

@canaryinacoalmine7267 But not in the PHYSICAL. Putin wants microchips, bearings and PLCs -- that he used to source from Germany. Now, he's sitting on a sea of cash -- and can't buy the stuff -- the PHYSICAL -- that his war machine needs. Iran, Red China, India, Venezuela, Cuba -- not one of them can scratch Putin's itch. All along, Putin figured that Germany would continue to sell war-goods to him. But, it turns out -- they won't. For many of these items, Germany is the sole source on planet Earth. It never occurred to Putin -- the Big Brain -- that Berlin might not be willing to be a wartime supplier... working against the strategic interests of NATO -- and its key patron -- the USA. You might remember the USA, it unified Germany after winning the Cold War... without a shot being fired. Some Germans still remember such history. Schroeder has been kicked to the curb by Berlin.

@DaDunge All European combatant powers lost an entire generation. This was brought up quite early in 'Chariots of Fire.' France lost in 1940 because Paris did not retire its (by now ancient) war heroes. As dark comedy, nothing could top the bizarre command networks the French Army started the war with. ( Motorcycle messengers instead of phone lines ! Generals commanding from luxury castles back near Paris ! ) The French army command stayed 48 to 72-hours behind reality in the field. ALL events shocked them. Incredibly, Paris had spent as much on their air force as Adolf did. But they never got many planes. All of the immense funding went into R&D and prototypes... never much in the way of mass production. (!) The national defense had been perverted into a job-program and a political slush fund. The various manufacturers were politically active -- and aligned -- with the two major factions. As these entered and left power, the various plane contracts were terminated -- to be given over to their rivals -- and fresh designs. The plane manufacturers were kicking back BIG graft to the pols. (Göring operated the same way.) [ This is still going on in the West. Boeing, Airbus, et. al are still gifting Large to politicians -- usually as astounding percs. In the modern day, the players make sure to kick booty to both sides of the aisle. The French production folly is not repeated.]

@kennethferland5579 Troop quality was not an issue for the French Army. Leadership was rotten -- at the top. De Gaulle bitterly complained about it. Between his writings and his Big Mouth he was promoted out of his regiment to become a general -- in the government, in Paris, instead. He even has his own biopic somewhere here on YT about those days. De Gaulle should've been made a general long before 1940, but the ancients stood in his way. In contrast, FDR got rid of the US Army's ancients -- by promoting George Marshall up from one to four stars at a stroke: 9-01-1939. Talk about timing! All of the ancients promptly resigned. (Marshall was the only top general to stay in his chair straight through the war.) ( It did run long. ) (FM Keitel doesn't count as he was a Nazi political-general -- never making any military decisions of any kind. His role was that of office fink, ratting out semi-soft German generals to Adolf. That's how he earned his baton -- and his nic 'the jackal.' (A play in German on his name and function.))

@0utcastAussie Put down the bong. Russia's shopping malls have (largely) shut down. Russia's air fleet is going to start falling from the sky -- no replacement parts. The planes are owned by Ireland -- mostly -- which is why Ireland has even come up in the war news. Putin has used his authority to block their return to their owners. ( The Irish leasing companies.) Putin wanted Ireland to opt out of the sanctions imposed by all of her trading partners. Fat chance ! (Ireland doesn't actually make any of the stuff it finances.) [ I see Russian oligarch funds being used to make the leasing firms whole. Don't you? ] Putin's oil wells will soon be forced into hiatus. That is, they must be capped off. Starting and stopping an oil well is a Big Deal. Usually, a capped well is never brought back. It was capped because it was marginally economic -- and after the flow stops -- it's economics don't improve. But the worst aspect is that the Far Eastern oil wells need American technology. Those boys have left Siberia. From this point on, production from such fields will just taper off. But these are the barrels that Xi is buying in quantity. Siemens won't sell Putin PLCs. Oops. These are required for all modern manufacturing. They are just everywhere -- in industry. Yet, most folks have never seen one, have no idea what I'm talking about. They use microchips that are sanctioned.
