The flow of the war -- for ALL combatant powers was decided by their air power. Their land forces, naval forces, could NOT be effective without air cover when defending and could not really advance without tremendous tactical air supremacy. The Red Army, the Red Air Force did not win the war for the United Nations. They did stop the Nazis from winning -- which while essential does not mean victory -- perhaps just a 'push' as they say in gambling circles. An example of this was the Iran-Iraq War in the 80's. That war produced clear-cut double losers. Both combatants limped away bleeding and crying. WWII was WON by the USAAF -- virtually single handed -- during Big Week -- by destroying the Luftwaffe's aviation fuel reserves and aviation fuel refineries. Only THREE refineries were producing virtually ALL of the Luftwaffe's aviation fuel. The other plants, of which there were so many, only produced motor fuels -- with a trivial (incidental) fraction of aviation grade fuel. ( Jet fuel being a wholly different matter. ) After The Big Week, the Reds just rolled over a paralyzed Wehrmacht. [ See Bagration ] The number of divisions destroyed was most impressive. But Bagration was anti-climatic. It should never have been fought. It was long past the time for Germany to throw in the towel. Berlin was committed to a mechanized war when it had no fuel to work it. By May 1944, the United Nations were out producing Germany -- in fuel -- 30:1. The RAF and USAAF were fuel pigs, of course.
