New Delhi is just going to be compelled to up its game. It needs SSNs that can hazard Red China's economy at the Strait of Malacca. Diesel-Electric power plants just cant' get that job done. Beijing does not fear New Delhi's SSBNs. The CCP figures on its aggression staying below atomic release. BUT, Beijing does fear having its single most critical trade route utterly shut down, single-handedly, by the Indian Navy... with SSNs. That Australia is going to soon have such a capability is driving the CCP crazy. The deal obviously sets the stage for the UK to base its SSNs -- on rotation -- in Australian ports. Perth and Darwin immediately spring to mind. Further down the road, look to see Taiwan and Japan fielding SSNs. I don't see how they won't. This is the natural result of Wolf Warrior diplomacy.

@1337flite Within the USN, tradition tells us that SSNs // SSBNs are kept AWAY from other fleet combatant ships -- even in port. There's not a lot of cross-over in terms of support functions. Whatever they do need will be custom to their ships. ( At 10,000 tons + , you can't call them boats anymore.) So, it's anyone's guess as to how basing will be worked out. I can say that in the grander sense, any submarine response to a CCP provocation will be an emergency if not a panic deployment. So having bases close to the Strait of Malacca is a serious consideration. SSNs are the obvious and primary threat to any PLAN scheme to steal the South China Sea. It may come to pass that it's re-named the ASEAN sea.
