At a fundamental level, the Original Poster is wrong. Yamamato was motivated to select Pearl Harbor, and the US as a whole, because of ONE BOOK. "The Great Pacific War" is still available in re-print. Just read it. It entirely explains why Pearl Harbor was struck -- and why virtually every 'opening move objective' was selected by the IJN in December 1941. A work of fiction published in 1925 -- while Yamamato was in Washington DC -- it became the template for ALL of the key players. Yup. Short weirdly located his aircraft in the middle of the runways BECAUSE of Bywater's scenario -- and for no other reason. Read the book. Yamamoto used Bywater's invasion beaches as he attacked Luzon, too. Indeed, Midway, the clash, was an echo of Bywater's scenario. Bywater's scenario was read and known by EVERY senior naval commander in the USN and IJN. He was the Tom Clancy of his day. What naval officer today has not read Red October?
