Court speech has a huge factor -- culturally. In the Danelaw, it must have hugely irritated any royal to have aides correct him WRT gender -- and then -- what of written edicts? What a royal pain ! Henry VIII famously had screw-ball (personal) lettering he clearly picked up from his Yorkish mother. Henry was the son of the feud. So he would've had a huge impact in his day. He certainly would've crossed back and forth from 'white' to 'red' in his speech, and do so before the rise of Shakespeare. No scribe around Henry is about to correct him. Look what he was doing to wives and ambassadors !
