  1. Thunderchild was based on the Turbinia -- a famous enough Parsons steam turbine demonstrator. Wells clearly knew of it. In his work, he's describing an incredibly fast warship that could whip around to face the Martian tripods, fast enough to even ram one. Wells also threw in a super-performance large calibre turreted gun. In substance, Wells was foretelling of Dreadnought. (1906) Any secondary battery guns were no part of Well's story.
