  1. The Volvo design is expressly for this situation. By allowing a pivot around the drive axle, the cabin stayed safe. This characteristic is WHY the industry has gone over for such machines in a Big Way. Virtually every back-dumper is at risk for soft ground. The crew should adjust -- and just never let such trucks anywhere near close to the edge -- as, by definition, the ground is NOT compacted and the drop-offs are usually quite scary. No driver really has a decent reference point, either. My solution, put very bright TWIN markers at 90degrees to the cab and parallel to the desired stop point. Let the CAT push the spoil over the side -- not the trucker.
