In all of your blather, you've over looked Japan's crippling distribution society. It's impossible for the Japanese to 'go Walmart' at retail. Yet, because of their labor constraint, this must change. You would be astonished as to how much labor is burned up, just chasing down payments by wholesalers via their salesmen. I speak from experience. Such collections are done in person. Think of the thousands of retailers involved. As for service, it's great. It's just that no-one can afford it... much. Productivity growth is nil, of course. THAT'S why it's in those fields that wages have proved so sticky. Japan wins when dealing with outsiders/exports where none of this social formality//foolishness is mandatory.
