  1. It's MUD SEASON. This is the worst season for combat operations. The Russians chose to retreat during Mud because of this. Winter and Summer are THE combat seasons in Ukraine and Russia. In winter, the rivers and swamps are frozen -- even the Volga freezes over. So, tanks LOVE winter fighting. Moscow expects Kyiv to drive to the Sea of Azov this winter... hence their trench works.
