  1. The USA is sending 2,000 (pretty big) generators to Ukraine. Read the press release. Europe is sending even more. You just know the priority is water pressure and communications -- and hospitals.

  3. ALL nuclear power plants have back-up Diesel generators on site just for this purpose. The Japanese screwed up -- by siting theirs in the tsunami zone. (!) The bigger worry is Russian sloppy attacks. They'll hit something critical in the control room -- by 'accident.'

  7.  @teamidris  SAMs can be converted to ground to ground munitions by simply aiming towards a ballistic path -- using their integral radar control -- and then letting the missile drop like the old V-2. The S-300 did require some modification -- namely that it's self-destruct logic had to be cut-out. As the V-2 showed, the impact of a multi-mach missile doubles the power of its warhead. I rather suspect that the actual missile that hit Poland WAS a Russian one -- but that NATO recognized a low-level screw-up when they saw it. NATO was not going to rise to the bait. Still, the incident did trigger yet MORE aid for Zelenskyy... a lot more.

  9. M113 and BMPs are amphibious. Crossing the river is not the problem. It's STAYING there. The UA gambit is to freeze the RA in place. That's sufficient to totally screw-up the RA.

  10.  @clavo3352  You've lost the plot. The UA is merely freezing the RA in place... as best as possible. Winter is freezing the Russians, too. I have no doubt that for a while, here, the UA is focused on straightening out civil society. Note the restoration of train travel to Kherson city. That fix also brings every manner of repair materials, generators, fuel, etc. After a time, I expect the UA to launch yet another counter-offensive. It could be anywhere... but the odds favor a drive to the Sea of Azov. They don't favor city fighting. The UA has turned down city fighting every step of the way -- unless it's defensive fighting. In winter, it's quite unnecessary to use the road network. The ground is FLAT -- remarkably so. During WWII neither the Krauts or the Soviets could establish any decent defense in this whole zone... going either way. The UA has HIMARS and it destroys the RA's artillery arm. But that destruction does take time. For the area under discussion, the trees are bare, the ground is flat, and there are no crops to hide within. The only defense is overcast skies.

  11. He was referring to the trivial advance onto the islands in the river. There are quite a few -- and both armies are now fighting in the middle of the Dnipro. This is an artillery driven war -- that and drones -- and missiles. So, don't expect tank thrusts.

  12. It's always in the wings -- but it's not a serious factor. The UA is not influenced by it. Sevastopol can't operate with UA missiles flying around, drone boats cruising. The Kerch bridge can't operate when Mr. HIMARS shows up. Then Crimea simply withers away -- militarily -- same as Kherson did.

  13. The purpose of this chatter is to PIN the RA in place. Nothing more. It's obvious that the UA is already across the Dnipro -- a tad up river. Heh. Right now, both armies are shifting forces to this area. Putin's fantasy plan is to pinch off the entire east of Ukraine; -- up from the south -- down from the north.

  17. They ARE doing it. BTW, wholesale prices are not at all retail prices. European power is pricey because of embedded taxes. These taxes on energy are there -- and hidden -- due to politics. Ukraine has drastically fewer taxes than Europe. The spread is astounding.

  19. Actually, they didn't. Neither Germany nor Britain seriously attacked each other's power grid. Yet, such attacks were proposed. The obvious counter-stroke by the enemy deterred both parties. The RAF did go after some dams -- but -- all in all -- that raid was very costly to the RAF -- and the damage to Nazi Germany was over-hyped then -- and forever after. In comparison, shooting up high power lines would've been child's play, but never done.

  30. The play is to roll down to the Sea of Azov -- just about anyhow it's done. It'd be best to avoid fighting in and around any major city. In the winter, there is no need to stay on the roads. The trees are bare, there are no growing crops, and the terrain is FLAT. In WWII, both Soviet and German armies found it impossible to establish a viable defense in this entire area. Read the histories. As for trenches -- the ground freezes. Even the Sea of Azov freezes over enough to stop shipping.
