The USAAF blew up and lit off Nazi Germany's AVGAS reserves and refineries. For AVGAS, Nazi Germany really only had THREE plants able to produce it in quantity. Foolishly, they stored said AVGAS right next door -- when any military man would've told the producers to park that stuff miles away and (hopefully) underground -- as it burns like crazy once lit. No AVGAS meant no Luftwaffe. It was grounded. Only a pitiful few machines could take to the air. The result was a total collapse in the East: Bagration -- and a virtually un-mechanized fight in the West. Once Patton turned the corner, the Germans couldn't even pull their panzers back. An amazing fraction had to be blown up by their retreating crews. Here and there, even that didn't happen. Hence, the Allies were able to capture intact King Tigers, Panthers and a lot more types, from time to time. (Still, not a whole lot of machines.) The Big Week, February 1944, is why the Wehrmacht couldn't hang on to ANYTHING. No gas = no go.
