In 1945 the USN suffered TWO typhoons while at sea. Losses were so high that they were censored out of the news. When their equivalent hits Red China's absurd so-called islands the surge will wipe clean any base -- entirely. Even with perfect construction, nothing will be left standing. One aspect of typhoons is that Nature picks up debris to batter that which is standing. In terms of naval warfare, these outposts are useless. They can not be compared to Okinawa or Guam. In the Big Picture, the CCP's gambit is an own-goal. Hanoi's moves are much more savvy. BTW, all involved are assuming that there is a LOT of oil under the SCS. But there isn't. Oil formation did occur in the deep past. But, to have it trapped, awaiting a drilling crew, the oil bearing strata needs a Capping Rock -- a lay of continuous tight rock that keeps the oil trapped -- even when the pressure is pretty intense. The subduction zone that gives us Krakatoa has destroyed the capping strata of the SCS over eons of time. Yeah, the original oil deposit has leaked away -- almost entirely. Only here and there are there any viable oil deposits. The US knows this because it explored the Philippines fifty-years ago for oil -- and found out just how fractured the geology of the SCS is. I know this because my client was one of the biggest players way back then.
