  2.  @Matt-mt2vi  It's a fact, the Truman administration reversed FDR's unconditional surrender schtick. Harry allowed the Emperor to stay on. EVEN SO that was not enough. Then came the nukes. THAT'S how it played out. The fact that HST walked back the unconditional surrender bit was suppressed then -- and -- largely now. Most don't know that this policy shift was communicated to the Japanese even before the bombs were dropped... 'cause it was a total reversal of FDR's policy. BTW, Hirohito was just as guilty as Tojo. Yup. That reality was suppressed past his passing. (!!!)
