The problem with PV cells is that they are VERY energy intensive to create -- and they keep degrading over time -- and dirt really hurts their performance. In the daytime, home arrays present a risk to firemen -- in most situations. Further, their net benefit to the grid is trivial in the extreme. Coal plants are being shut down due to government policy and the fracking boom in natural gas. Solar power has NOTHING to do with forcing these plants to shut down. The real solution to Green Energy is Andean hydro-power. There's enough hydro-potential in Peru, alone, to power our hemisphere. Yup. It just shoots down the eastern slopes. Venezuela and Columbia also have staggering hydro-potentials. Electric cars make no sense because we wish to drive when the Sun is shining -- largely. So PV generation is ALWAYS mis-matched with the grid. It needs to be mated to pumped-storage schemes. Otherwise, it just does not scale up.
