With the help of one of his students Clifford E. Berry, in Iowa State College, during the 1940s, he created the ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer) that was the first electronic digital computer. The number of his inventions directly connected to his digital conception is astounding. He spent years working on extremely classified naval weapons (think Polaris) (think anti-submarine detection) -- so he was highly obscure in his own day. Leonardo imagined amazing weapons of war -- all totally impractical in his own time -- and now. Atanasoff's inventions are simply EVERYWHERE.
