Omitted/ deflected -- the REAL purpose of the highway was to avoid U-boats -- so as to ensure that critical war goods reached Moscow. At the time, these items were secret -- even top secret -- so it's no wonder that the film omits them. The Germans had knocked out the only vacuum tube factory in all of the USSR -- late in 1941. This created a crisis in Soviet communications. Stalin requested American radio tubes -- on the hurry up -- but was able to convince the Americans that such shipments were to merely augment his own. Heh. The result is that even years after the war, historians totally missed the biggest crisis facing the Bolsheviks. Stalin had to jerk radio tubes out of existing sets so that enough were in hand for critical command networks. There are no end of Soviet diaries lamenting the loss of their radio sets during 1942. All of this was reversed late in 1942 -- amazingly -- just when the AlCan Highway was first completed. Some co-incidence, no? The result was the victory of Uranus -- the defeat of the German 6th Army -- the Big Turning Point of WWII. This highway really meant Lend-Lease -- sent by air freight.
