@unacceptablemooshmeat2213 It was an uncommon law marriage, though.

@isaiahwelch8066 #5 was a 'team thing' from the 1830s. There is a museum dedicated to 'precision' in New England -- showcasing all of the original devices. It's astounding.

@isaiahwelch8066 Interchangeable parts were NOT a 'real thing' until the 1830s -- with the very machines that did so still in the museum. The CONCEPT preceded the reality by a full generation. It only became meaningful BECAUSE the parts became produced by machine -- not amazing craft skill. Everything fed on itself -- very much like Silicon Valley's surge -- especially around Hewlett-Packard. Until the amazing machine tools were invented, ones that could consistently produce to high precision, interchangeablity had no economic merit. Until the Americans created repeatable precision -- and test instruments to keep their machines on their marks -- there were no interchangeable parts. Even today, pistols (hog legs/ wheel guns) are so touchy that they are individually 'tweaked' by craftsmen to achieve the requisite standard. It's one reason why top-of-the line pistols go for so much $$$$. All of these breakthroughs were solely for guns. Only later did the industry shift over to elegant consumer goods. By modern standards, everything produced cost a small fortune. Their dear prices are the primary reason that these antiques were always preserved... never discarded.

@oldchap1228 Da Vinci was brilliant -- and died with his ideas buried, too. He was discovered in the 19th Century by German researchers. (!) NONE of his contemporaries knew of his writings -- easily explained as you needed mirrors to read them. Mirrors were not ready-to-hand in his day. (Expensive)
